Come and catch the tail of summer! Participate in the most romantic encounters on the East Coast;

Although I have visited some outer islands of Taiwan,

Except for the vase, Peng Jia, and Mian Mianyu who have not yet arrived,

We didn’t make a special trip to go whale watching. We were happy to go experience it with our children.

A great combination of recreation and ecological conservation,

Taraman Whale Watching and Kuroshio Cultural Foundation:

Doroman Whale Watching

https://www.turumoan.com.tw/tw/index.php

The Kuroshio Ocean Cultural and Educational Foundation, established in Hualien in 1998, is the first non-profit organization in Taiwan to advocate for “whales, dolphins and the ocean”. It started with a survey of cetaceans and has been deeply engaged in marine issues, environmental education and scientific surveys for many years. It is like a warm and firm Kuroshio current on land, hoping that every Taiwanese will have an ocean in their heart.

“Tide is science, black is poetry.”

Writer Wu Mingyi described Kuroshio in this way, which shows that Kuroshio is both full of scientific spirit and contains the characteristics of humanistic care. The Kuroshio is based on science and has long-term ecological surveys of wild cetaceans. It has also introduced marine debris monitoring methods, hoping to achieve source management and actively promote Taiwan’s attention to “marine protected areas” in the future; the Kuroshio is also soft, and through Publish picture books, literary books and documentaries, hold lectures, exhibitions and experiential travel and other activities, and never forget to go to schools to share the concept of ocean conservation with children, so that island people can get close to each other, get to know each other, and then protect the ocean.

Look to the ocean,

Thanks to the Kuroshio Cultural Foundation for its 25 years of efforts in marine ecological conservation,

A GPS is used to record the ecological records of whales and dolphins every time before going out on the boat; especially before taking a whale watching boat, you need to take a good class,

Go to the beautiful Japanese-style Sea Mine Exploration Center for check-in and pre-departure commentary!

The Marine Mine Exploration Center is the first and only deep ocean water factory in Taiwan that has received three major certifications. It is located at the Taiwan Fertilizer Hualien Factory

, the factory covers an area of 46 square meters, and the hinterland is quite broad! Follow the park indicators to reach the Marine Mine Exploration Center, which is the largest deep ocean water tourism factory in Asia.

【Hualien Harbor Whale Paradise】

Go out to sea on the Doroman Whale Watching Cruise from Hualien Sightseeing and Fishing Port.

Only by taking a boat on the largest ocean can you see Taiwan’s coastal mountains, Hualien Port, Qixingtan, Taroko Bridge, and Taroko National Park, which are so beautiful;

The whale watching boat in Hualien Port can reach as far north as the sea off Chongde, and as far south as the sea off Yanliao on the east coast.

The nearly two-and-a-half-hour flight was almost in vain,

Unexpectedly, nearly a hundred long-beaked spinner dolphins appeared in another village!

It’s soothing to be surrounded by a pod of dolphins, spinning in the air and following the whale watching boat. Of course, the kids are also crazy!

If you want to see sperm whales, it’s mostly from May to August, but that doesn’t mean you can’t see them in winter..

April to October is the best season for whale watching.

Especially in summer, as long as there are no typhoons and the walruses are stable, it is very easy to see the beautiful figures of whales and dolphins.

The most common whales and dolphins are the “spinner dolphins” that only appear in the eastern sea. If you are lucky, you can see them showing off their gorgeous spinning posture on the sea surface.

The second most common “patterned dolphin” is the calm patterned dolphin. The scratches on its body are traces of years of experience.

Whale watching in Hualien can also see tropical spotted dolphins, Freund’s dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, killer whales, false killer whales, sperm whales, short-limbed pilot whales, etc. In March and April, you may also have the opportunity to see migrating in the east The big-winged whale!

A tip for whale watching on a boat. Sitting on the 1F cabin will make you feel closer to the ocean.

The area outside Hualien Harbor is also an ecological paradise for whales and dolphins. It is very suitable for the conservation and maintenance of the ecological paradise park for whales and dolphins.

Only the sea is deep and wide enough,

It can only accommodate large whales and dolphins; Hualien faces the vast Pacific Ocean, and with the abundant fish and shrimp swimming with the Kuroshio, it creates a sea area with suitable terrain and sufficient food for whales and dolphins to swim in.

Huadonghai Basin and Kuroshio

The Hualien Coast on the western edge of the “Huadong Basin” has a very special topography. The average seawater depth is 6,000 meters, but the continental shelf area with a water depth of more than 200 meters is very narrow; the average width of the continental shelf in the world is about 78 kilometers, while Hualien is less than 20 kilometers from land to the sea and has a depth of 3,000→5,000 meters. Such a deep sea makes it difficult for bottom-dwelling fish such as groupers to survive, but it can accommodate large marine creatures such as whale sharks and sperm whales.

Due to the sharp drop in the depth of the Hualien seabed, it is not far from the land and is enough to accommodate the Kuroshio (North Equatorial Current) that goes north from the equator. This huge body of water is not only clear, but also has a temperature (28→32°C) and a salinity (approximately 35‰) are higher than the coastal currents, so they appear a deep dark blue.

From Chongde Shijizi, walk up the remaining Suhua Ancient Road and look out at the roaring Pacific Ocean. You can clearly see this multi-layered blue spreading on the sea;

Rivers running from land to sea produce green coastal currents along the coast.

The intersection of tides is also a place where life gathers. Because the Huadong Sea Basin is close to the coast, it guides the Kuroshio to the offshore, creating a mutually pushing tide boundary. Plankton therefore gathers, and at the same time it brings abundant migratory fish, attracting Many whales and dolphins come to feed.

So there are nearly 90 species of cetaceans in the world, and 31 species have been recorded in Taiwan, accounting for one-third of the world’s total!
