Shuangxi Peony Station

During the Japanese colonial period, the railway reached Peony before extending to Shuangxi. The opening of the railway to both Peony and Shuangxi had a groundbreaking impact on travel to Yilan!
This is akin to the historical route of the Tamsui-Kavalan Trails North Route, which stretched from Nuannuan through Gongliao’s coast to Yilan.
Peony, referred to as “Wudan” during the Qing Dynasty, with “Dan” meaning settlement in the language of the Pingpu tribes, indicates that before the Han settlers arrived to clear the land, there were already numerous Pingpu communities residing in this area.

Hualien Port and Meilun Strategy Guide

If traveling from the north to the Hualien-Taitung East Coast, one can follow the Suhua Highway to Xincheng, opting not to enter the traditional city area.
