【Four generations of farming in Hualien and Fenglin】
【The past and present of the Hualien-Taitung Longitudinal Valley Road (Part 9)】

There are four immigrant villages in eastern Taiwan,
Hualien Ji’an Immigration Village, Fengtian Immigration Village, Fenglin Immigration Village, and Taitung Luye Immigration Village; Hualien and Fenglin have different features.

Hualien and Fenglin are Hakka towns, and Hakka people are relatively hardworking.
So the Japanese attracted many Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miao people to open up the land, develop and take root here, and gradually created the scale of the Fenglin Hakka settlement;
To this day, the Yanlou settlement and the Japanese immigrant village are important historical and cultural assets of Fenglin.

Driving about an hour from Hualien City, Fenglin has more of the flavor of a tobacco tower compared to Shoufeng Zhixue, because it is the unique flavor of a Hakka settlement. As far as I can remember, this is the only place in the entire Hualien-Taitung Valley that has a tobacco tower.

Slow Food Restaurant – Four Generations of Farming
“Four Generations of Farming” is a “no menu” slow food restaurant established by Wang Yiming and You Xiuqi in their hometown. It is located on a small road in Dayong Village, Fenglin Township, and the green stretching across the mountains and fields under the blue sky makes people feel so comfortable!
It is not on the provincial road and you need to rely on navigation to find it.

This restaurant is surrounded by fields and has inconvenient transportation, but it attracts travelers from all over. The owner is very good at chatting. I always chat with him during meals and take photos with him.

“Four generations of farmers” This nearly 100-year-old house was the former residence of the great-grandfather of the Wang family and looks like an early farmhouse courtyard. Mr. Wang, who used to run a home-style snack shop in Taoyuan, decided to move his family because his health could not bear the long-term business until the supper hours; he returned to his hometown Fenglin, Hualien to recuperate and return to rural life. After repairing and strengthening the structure of his ancestral home, he began to cook farm-style dishes in his home, which has been a tradition for four generations of farmers.

Natural materials are mostly used indoors and outdoors,
such as bamboo, wood, stone and plant-dyed cotton,

The tables and chairs are antique and driftwood,
creating a sense of rural comfort without pressure,
the dim light is a warm matchmaker,
making the dining mood soothing and relaxing

From the website, the story of the rebirth of “Four Generations of Farming” is as follows:

The layout was all created by the Wang family couple.
Not only did they retain the old cabinets, tables and chairs, chopping boards, and old-fashioned tailor’s carts, but they also have driftwood handmade wooden tables and benches, plus straw raincoats, threshers, rice jars, corn machines, etc., making every corner full of Taiwanese old-fashioned flavor.
The first time I went there was to try something new, and it became a habit because the CP value was too high. I remember it was a hidden version of food recommended by the article;
Every time I passed Fenglin at noon, I would call the boss to have a meal.

The food is traditional and delicious, with a wide variety of dishes.
The braised meat is melt-in-the-mouth and tastes great, and the fish seasoned with roselle is also very special and delicious;
The complimentary lemon juice is also delicious… Every dish is very unique and worth visiting again and again! The dishes that I remember include: fried wontons, cold pork skin, fish balls, Sichuan boiled shrimps, poached chicken, braised fish with Roselle, Hakka stir-fried dishes, stir-fried blue and white flowers, mushroom chicken soup, two bottles of lemon juice, and fruit.

Come to the four generations of farmers to eat, charge per person,
The store prepares dishes according to seasonal ingredients, the leafy vegetables are mainly vegetables grown by the store, the pickles are homemade, and even the tea and juice that come with the meal are cooked and adjusted by the store.

Currently, due to the road conditions of Suhua Highway, the number of passengers from the north has decreased significantly. I hope everyone will go to dine and support us when passing by!
