【Northeast Point Road Today and Past Side Story (18)】

“My porters accompanied me on my missionary journey carrying clothes, medicines and books. Entering every village and tribe, every city and settlement.” This is a passage from “Ma Kai’s Diary”.

There is a beautiful paragraph in the diary: “In the evening, we entered the beautiful Han Chinese town of Dingshuangxi. The town is located between two gushing streams. There is a valley in the distance that looks like the glen of old Scotland. ”

On March 7, 1872, Dr. MacKay from Canada crossed the ocean and came to Taiwan. What greeted him was a land where the holy religion had not yet emerged and transportation and travel were extremely inconvenient.

But this seemingly wild land is actually the land where Dr. Mackie established a deep emotional attachment and devoted himself to his career. It is also the land where he finally rested.

During Dr. Mackie’s 30 years of preaching, most of his missionary work was through “traveling” with students, on foot, by boat, by train, along river systems or in mountains and hills,

Everywhere he went, he would pull cavities out of people’s teeth, preach the gospel, and sow the seeds of Christianity bit by bit.

In an era when the Beiyi Railway had not yet been opened and land transportation was extremely inconvenient, between 1872 and 1900, Machabo traveled to and from the Kavalan area nearly 30 times, and the road he took was known today as “Tan Lan Ku Road North”!

Ma Kai is closely associated with the northeastern corner, and the Sandiaoling Jinzipi Ancient Road and Caoling Ancient Road are the focus of the missionary journey back to Ma Kai. The churches established by Ma Kai next to them are Shuangxi Church and Binxi Church. “William Memorial Church” is not to be missed.

Ma Kai crossed the northeast corner and entered Lan. He continued to preach in this area for more than 20 years until he completed his last trip in May 1900.
