This book discusses the fundamental spirit of the founder of Quanzhen Sect, Wang Chongyang, who founded the sect. The whole book is divided into living in an nunnery, traveling in the clouds, learning books, combining medicine, building structures, combining Tao companions, meditating, lowering the mind, linking nature, matching the five qi, mixing life, the holy way, transcending the three realms, cultivating the body, leaving the mortal world, etc. There are fifteen articles, so it is called the “Fifteen Treatises on Establishing the Teaching”.

This book aims to integrate Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, and thereby re-establish the spirit of Taoism. The book emphasizes the three realms of renunciation, the form realm, and the formless realm. In addition, it also emphasizes the importance of meditation and complete renunciation, which is influenced by Zen Buddhism.

Quanzhen can be divided into North Quanzhen and South Quanzhen. North Quanzhen is on the other side and belongs to Northern Rhyme. South Quanzhen is on the other side and belongs to Guangcheng Rhyme. Guangcheng Rhyme is closer to the rhyme of Zhengyi School.

[Taiwan and Heming Mountain]

Daochang Liu studied at Heming Mountain in Sichuan,

Almost all of Taiwan’s Longmen Quanzhen Dharma originates from Heming Mountain. Born in Taiwan, we are not very familiar with Heming Mountain. Perhaps more people know about Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi. I will try to share the history of Heming Mountain with everyone:

[Sichuan Heming Mountain]

It is said that Zhang Daoling practiced Taoism and preached Taoism in Heming Mountain, Yuelai Town, Heming Township, Dayi County, Sichuan during the reign of Emperor Shun of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The four famous Taoist mountains in China are: Wudang Mountain in Hubei, Qingcheng Mountain in Sichuan, Qiyun Mountain in Anhui and Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi. Heming Mountain in Yuelai Town, Heming Township, Dayi County, Sichuan Province, is also called Huming Mountain. The mountain is shaped like a crane, hence the name.

During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Emperor Shun of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling, the ancestral master of heaven, founded the Zhengyi League and Wei Tao here, so this mountain is revered as the birthplace of Taoism. According to historical records, the earliest Taoist temple on the mountain was the Shangqing Palace built by Patriarch Zhang Daoling. After successive expansions, by the time of the Republic of China, it had hundreds of temples including Shangqing, Tianshi, Ziyang, Yingxian, and Wenchang. During the Cultural Revolution, the Hemingshan Taoist Temple was severely damaged and reopened as a religious activity site in 1987. Yingxian Pavilion, Yanxiang Temple, Doumu Hall, Sansheng Palace, Tianshi Hall and other palaces have been restored and newly built.

Heming Mountain, also known as Huming Mountain, is the birthplace of Taoism. It is located in Heming Township, Dayi County, Chengdu, Sichuan, about 70 kilometers away from Chengdu. Heming Mountain has an altitude of 600 to 1,331 meters. It is connected to Wuzhong Mountain, the first stop for the spread of Buddhism to the south. It forms a natural ecological barrier of hundreds of square kilometers and is a good summer resort.

During the period of Emperor Shun of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling founded Tianshi Tao (Five Pecks of Rice Tao) here, marking the official founding of Taoism. It is said that Guangchengzi (Ma Chengzi) in the pre-Qin Dynasty and Zhouyishan in the Western Han Dynasty both flew across the crane here (“The Internal Biography of Ziyang Zhenren Zhoujun” written by overseas Chinese in the Eastern Jin Dynasty) said that Zhouyishan “climbed Heming Mountain and met Yang Anjun to receive the “Golden Alchemy Sutra” , “Nine Cauldrons Divine Pill Picture”). According to legend, Li Jue, a descendant of the hermit Lao Dan, once lived in seclusion in this mountain. He kept cranes as his companions, played chess and learned Taoism. He heard the cranes chirping at the foot of the mountain.

Many famous Taoist priests throughout the ages have practiced here. For example, Du Guangting of the late Tang and Five Dynasties, Chen Tuan (Xiyi) of the Northern Song Dynasty, and the famous Taoist Zhang Sanfeng of the Ming Dynasty all practiced Taoism here. Tang Qiu in the Tang Dynasty, Du Guangting in the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, Wen Yuke and Lu You in the Song Dynasty, Yang Sheng’an in the Ming Dynasty and other celebrities in the Qing Dynasty all wrote inscriptions on Heming Mountain.

Some emperors also went to Heming Mountain to worship gods and ancestors. Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty once wrote an imperial edict in his own hand and gave it to Wu Boli, a Taoist from Longhu Mountain, asking him to go to Heming Mountain to welcome the immortal Zhang Sanfeng. Later, Wu Boli built a building at the foot of Heming Mountain. After entering the Yingxian Pavilion, Emperor Jiajing designated Heming Mountain as one of the five major altars for holding nationwide prayers for eternal life.

According to some believers of Taoism, the beginning of Taoism is “Dao”, which originated in the Central Plains. Five thousand years ago, Taihao Fuxi established Jiao Zen and promoted it to a group of temples. Emperor Yan Shennong offered sacrifices to ghosts and gods. , inspired the original beliefs of mankind and became one of the oldest religions in the world.

Everyone has the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of the “Taoism” of the Chinese ancestral culture.
