The boss is explaining to the customers what other goodies there are in Chishang. While carefully sharing information about a certain store, he also reminds guests: “You have to call first to ask if there are any, because sometimes they are sold out and they are gone, so I am afraid you will miss out.” Unexpectedly, the customer actually complained angrily: “You easterners just don’t know how to do business! Just prepare more ingredients and make more portions for several days at a time. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient for customers to come all the way and not be able to buy anything.” ”

I just remember the boss’s cool response at the time: “Because we all do it by hand and use the freshest ingredients, if we don’t have it, there will really be nothing. It’s not that we don’t know how to do business, but we insist on doing it. The freshest and best are provided to customers. And why should you live like a machine? You can have a good rest and live a good life after selling out!

I can’t help but want to give my boss a high-five from afar! This conversation once again reflects my many years of observation of Taitung. Many people in Taitung share that selling their own handmade goods is actually a part of life. It’s not about doing business. It’s not that I can’t do it or I don’t want to do it, but I want to live a good life. Live a good life and take care of your livelihood at the same time. This is such a moving and worth-learning daily practice~

Just like the poet Yu Guangzhong wrote about Taitung, “The city is shorter than Taipei, but the sky is much higher than Taipei. The lights are lighter than Taipei, but the stars are much brighter than Taipei.”

The development of those so-called civilizations has been rare, which makes this place contain the richest features, as well as the environment and people’s hearts. The soul that slows down, I believe you can enjoy endless abundance here! I am still experiencing and learning bit by bit.

This is really like the Higashikawa style that Hokkaido has recently become famous for; a life with blank spaces like a traditional Chinese painting! There are many small farmers in the east who live a serious and comfortable life! There are many great small shops with unique owners!
