The highlight of the Northeast Trail is Cola Mountain and Lehai!

And at the same time, mountains and seas fight together!

It can be divided into half-day short trails,

Or it can take more than half a day to connect multiple trails.

Half a day is small and beautiful, just a quick taste.

Half a day or more is considered enjoyable and enjoyable!

Shuyun: “The longer I walk, the less able I am to separate my body, mind and surrounding environment. The external and internal worlds overlap with each other. I am no longer an observer looking at nature, but my whole person is involved in it.” .

The long trail in the northeast corner is currently mainly located on Tamlan Ancient Road North Road.

The main reason is that the road signs are clear and the transportation is convenient.

Once you enter the paradise of the long trail in the northeast corner,

You will fall in love with the paradise-like scenery here,

But this requires living in Taiwan.

Spend some time here in the northeast corner!

[Caoling Ancient Road]

In the early days, the Caoling Ancient Trail could almost be regarded as the representative trail in the northeastern corner. Before New Taipei City fully promoted the Danlan Ancient Trail, the Caoling Ancient Trail was already famous, perhaps because of the miso flowers!

There are two entrances to the west side of Caoling Ancient Road, Gongliao and Fulong, and the exit is Dali. Because it enters from point A and exits from point B, there are train stations at both entrances and exits, which is convenient for travelers.

The entrance to the hiking trail is from Gongliao Station and exits from Dali Tiangong Temple. You can also walk in the opposite direction, but it is easier to walk from Dali.

The star highlights along the way include Xiongzhen Manyan and Huzipi, as well as the seasonal Manghua and Wangyuankeng Park at the entrance.

The entire walking distance of Xingcaoling Ancient Trail takes about 3 hours. You only need to prepare simple food and light clothing to get on the road easily.

The Caoling Ancient Trail is one of the many Tamlan Ancient Trails opened by ancestors from Tamsui Hall to Kavalan Hall. It runs from Yuanwangkeng, Gongliao District, New Taipei City, to Dali, Toucheng Town, Yilan County. The path passes through the boundary mountain between the two counties and cities. Caoling”, hence the name “Caoling Ancient Road”.

The time and history corridor of Caoling Ancient Road has a deep connection with Taiwan’s governor Yang Tingli and the commander-in-chief of Taiwan’s town Liu Mingdeng. Most of them were for governance, military, transportation…

The predecessor of the ancient road was only opened in 1790. It was a mountain road from Nuannuan via Shishi, Dingshuangxi and out of Lanyang. In 1807, Taiwan Governor Yang Tingli established a mountain road from Sijiao Pavilion, through Snake Zaixing to Dingshuangxi and out of Lanyang via Caoling.

Snake shape is located near the big bend of the Keelung River in Ruifang. The place name is derived from the snake-like shape of the local hills.

In 1823, Lin Pinghou, because the transportation from Monga to Kavalan was very inconvenient, he spent money to expand the route of Yang Tingli.

In 1856, Lin Pinghou’s son Guohua inherited his father’s ambition and built a route from Keelung via Ruifang and Dingshuangxi to Sandiaoling. Since then, this path has become an important road between the two places.

While hiking uphill, you will come to the Manyan Mojie Stone Monument in Xiongzhen.

The Manyan Mojie Stone Monument in Xiongzhen is located halfway up the ancient road, with a width of 3.36 meters and a height of 1.19 meters. In the sixth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1867 AD), Liu Mingdeng, the commander-in-chief of the town, visited Kamalan in the north and encountered heavy fog while passing here. The dense fog made it difficult for passers-by to identify the direction, so Liu Mingdeng wrote the four words “Xiongzhen Manyanmojie” on the stone tablet here to suppress the mountain demon.

Going further, you will enter the saddle of Caoshan. The wind will be strong in the second half of the year. When you enter the saddle of Caoling, you can see the tiger character pit, which is even more beautiful during the Miscanthus season!

The stele with the character “Tiger” was written by Liu Mingdeng, the commander-in-chief of Taipei suppression in the 6th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1867). It is a rare cursive script with the character “Tiger” written in it, which is powerful and powerful. Liu Mingdeng was passing near the top of Caoling Mountain and was blocked by strong winds, so he took the meaning of “wind follows tiger and cloud follows dragon” from the Book of Changes, wrote the character “lihu” with a brush and carved it on a huge stone to suppress the wind demon.

Both sites are listed as national third-level historic sites.

Liu Mingdeng, the commander-in-chief of Zhentai, has ruins on Caoling Ancient Road and Jinzipi Ancient Road. It can be said that he is also closely related to the northeast corner.

Liu Mingdeng (1838-1895), courtesy name Zhaoyuan and nickname Jianqing, was a military attaché from Dayong, Hunan Province (now Yongding, Zhangjiajie) in the Qing Dynasty. He served as the commander-in-chief of Taiwan and the admiral of Gannan. He was good at calligraphy.

The road names we see today, such as Mingdeng Road and Mingdeng Bridge, are all commemorating the former Taiwanese General Soldier.

Not long after crossing the ridge line to Huzipi, you can reach Fude Temple, which is located at Yakou. It is a small Tuigong Temple built of stone. In front of the temple, there is a boundary monument between Beiyi and Yi counties. It is quite rare to worship the Tu Gong and Tu Tu Po at the same time.

Every time I take a stroll to Fude Temple, I can see the Pacific Ocean and Guishan Island from an open perspective, which is always beautiful!

I remember walking here at the end of one year and suddenly saw the Pacific Ocean. The waves on the sea were as green as Sun Moon Lake. It was really unforgettable!

In the post-epidemic era, it’s the miso flower season again, and travelers on the ancient roads are constantly coming, just like Ximending!

I remember that few travelers traveled on the Caoling Ancient Road last year, and most of the road sections were almost traveled alone.

The mountains near Anbu are covered with greenery, and the view is amazingly wide. On one side you can see Guishan Island in the Pacific Ocean, and on the other side you can look back at Gongliao, Fulong Beach, and the Pacific Ocean!

From God’s perspective, the geographical terrain is clear, and the ancient road is located just at the saddle of Caoshan. You can easily reach Yilan by walking here, and you can go to Taoyuan Valley by going up another branch of the road.

Su Dongpo said: “Everything has something to behold. Even if there is something to behold, there is joy in it. It does not have to be strange and magnificent.”

Japanese Pilgrimage Route Kumano Kodo

Kumano Kodo, Kumano, Japan’s spiritual holy land, has gone through the test of time. The Kumano Kodo is one of the only pilgrimage routes in the world registered as a World Heritage. The history of this place stretches over thousands of years.

For thousands of years, the mysterious mountainous area of Kumano has been considered a “holy place where gods live.” During the Heian period (794-1185), the royal family and courtiers embarked on a 30 to 40-day journey from the then capital Heian-kyo (now Kyoto) to this remote area in search of a pure land in the secular world. The three major shrines, Kumano Sanzan, are located in this area.

Japanese Pilgrimage Route to Shikoku

There is such a road in Shikoku, Japan. It has a history of 1,200 years and a length of 1,200 kilometers. Originally a practice method of the Japanese Shingon sect, from the first Lingshan Temple to the 88th Okubo Temple, the four stages of “motivation, practice, Bodhi, and Nirvana” are represented along the way. In modern times, Benlu is still a kind of pilgrimage to calm the soul, pray for blessings and make vows. It is not only a “path of faith and practice”, but also a “path of re-examining oneself.” (Excerpted from Xiao Ou’s “Passing the Road: A 1,200-Kilometer Hiking Record of Four Countries”)

It is said that Tairyuji Temple in Shikoku Benji is the dojo of Namo Kōzozo Bodhisattva!

Tamland Road, Taiwan

The “Tanlan Ancient Road” was the main transportation road from Tamsui Hall to Kavalan Hall (today’s Taipei to Yilan) during the Qing Dynasty. From 1800 to 1900, it was the golden period when the Han nationality in northern Taiwan began to develop from the west to the east. In addition to geographical factors, the governance policies of the Qing Dynasty and the resilience of the ancestors’ reclamation have continued to leave traces on the surface of Northern Taiwan. The historical roads have become witnesses of Northern Taiwan’s glorious century. The Tanland Trail spans the four administrative regions of present-day northern Taiwan (New Taipei City, Keelung City, Taipei City, and Yilan County). Currently, most of the trails are still favorite secret trails for mountaineers. (Recorded from Danlan website)

At the starting point of the Snowy Mountains, in the hilly northeast corner, people who make the mountains their home hunt and gather, engage in private reclamation, travel and trade, and intermarry and fight. They have established several settlements, several trails, and official roads for postal, military, and material transportation. Pipeline, a dense road network between the Taipei Basin and the Kavalan Plain, is called the Danlan Centenary Mountain Trail Group’s generalized ancient trail system.

The Danlan Mountain Trail goes through the mountains and into the sea, passing through four major terrains in northern Taiwan: Keelung Volcanic Group, Taipei Basin, Shuangxi Hills, and Lanyang Plains; Keelung River, Beishi Creek, Jingmei Creek, Mudan Creek, water and land crossings, subtropical The environment and climate of the rainforest, the diversity of species, especially the ferns of the dinosaur age; along the Danlan Road through the snow-capped mountains, connecting the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific Ocean; it was also the cultural path of the Age of Discovery, connecting the world! (Excerpt from Danlan Gudao North Road)

[Northeast corner Jinzipi Ancient Road, Zhuwei Shumeikeng]

The Jinzipi Ancient Trail starts from Houtong Station. It is most convenient to take the Taiwan Railway to Houtong Station and then walk to Shuoren Elementary School.

The inscription reads, “Shuangjing came to Danlan in the distance, and my vision was opened today when I climbed up. The big and small chicken coops are covered with snow, and the high and low pheasants are holding the thunder. It travels ten miles through the clouds, and is lined with thousands of chapters to shade the ancient locust trees. The sea-mountain whale salamander is now resting in the waves, Diligence in military training will bring out talents.”

In the sixth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty, when internal and external troubles arose, Taiwanese soldier Liu Mingdeng led his troops on a northern patrol to Sandiao Ridge, leaving a “golden-character monument” along the way.

Climbing to the ridgeline, you can see Shen’ao Fishing Port and Chaojing Park near the bay in the northeast. You can also see Keelung Port Concorde Power Plant in the distance and the Qixing Datun Mountains of Yangmingshan National Park in the north toward Jinshan! So far it’s open

The Jinzibei Ancient Trail is the San Diao Ridge section of the Danlan Ancient Trail. It was an early land passage between Taipei and Yilan. There is an inscription on the rock wall of the trail: “Shuangjing came from afar to Danlan. Today’s climb has opened my eyes; big and small chicken coops” There is snow in the Ming Dynasty, and the high and low battlements are carrying thunder; the clouds are connected for ten miles to the dense dragon, and the ancient locust trees are shaded by thousands of chapters; the whale salamanders on the sea are resting now, and they are diligently practicing martial arts to bring out the best talents.” He also painted the words and poems with gold foil, which is why This trail was called the Golden Monument Trail.

Dr. Ma Kai has been preaching in Taiwan for more than 30 years, traveling all the way from Shuangxi and Gongliao to Kavalan. In order to cross San Diao to Kavalan, one needs to cross the Danlan Official Road opened by the Qing Dynasty, that is, the Ancient Golden Stele Road. Take a group photo with the students on the Jinzibei Ancient Road.

In previous visits to Jinzipi Ancient Trail, I could only complete the first section. After climbing the stairs from Houtong to Tanyou Pavilion to Route 102, I went directly to Diaoshan Ancient Trail and strolled back to Mudan Station.

Because in the early days, the Jinzibei Ancient Road from County Road 102 to Mudan was mostly deserted and overgrown with smoke and grass. Now, due to the planning of the North Road of the Danlan Ancient Road, the path is obvious and easy to follow, and the signs are clear.

In order to completely complete the back section of Jinzipi, walk north along Route 102 from the station towards Jiufen. On foot, you can overlook the famous mountains in the northeast corner, including Canguangliao Mountain and Dingshan Mountain; , and Lai Lan Mountain, one of Fulong’s three stars. When you walk for about an hour to 23K, you can see the entrance sign of the Tam Lan Ancient Trail.

The trail goes downhill all the way. After the stone steps at the beginning, you enter the Mulan stairs. After walking for about half an hour, you enter the bamboo forest. There is no view in the bamboo forest, so you have to focus on moving forward. Finally, you arrive at the small Tudigong Temple. Walk left to the old path. The industrial road with stone slabs ends at a farmhouse and then enters the asphalt road. You will see the sign of Danlan Ancient Road. If you go right, you can reach Diao Shan Ancient Road and Canguangliao Ancient Road. If you go left, you will see the Centennial Temple dedicated to the Jade Emperor. Qingyun Palace, this section takes about 45 minutes.

From Qingyungong to the square in front of the police station to pick up the car, there are asphalt roads along the way. After crossing the Zhengguang No. 2 Bridge, looking back at the beautiful Canguangliao Mountain, we returned to Mudan Railway Station in a relaxed and happy mood.

The Golden Stele Ancient Road shines in the time and space of the historical corridor due to the official road of Danlan North Road and Ma Kai’s visit.

The Jinzipi Ancient Trail can also be reached by Route 102 to Shumeikeng, so to get to Shumeikeng, travelers can take the Jinzipi Ancient Trail and walk to Route 102.

[Meeting Ma Kai on the Tamlan Ancient Road in the northeast corner, Ma Kai’s missionary journey]

The best way for travelers to walk along the Tamlan Ancient Trail and the ancient trail is Machay. The best way for travelers to walk is on the railway station trail in the northeast corner. The choice of 5 railway stations and switching on foot is the best way. .

“My porters accompanied me on my missionary journeys carrying clothes, medicines, and books. Entering every village and tribe, every city and settlement.” This is a passage from “Ma Kai’s Diary”.

There is a beautiful paragraph in the diary: “In the evening, we entered the beautiful Han Chinese town of Dingshuangxi. The town is located between two gushing streams. There is a valley in the distance that looks like the glen of old Scotland.”

On March 7, 1872, Dr. MacKay from Canada crossed the ocean and came to Taiwan. What greeted him was a land where the holy religion had not yet emerged and transportation and travel were extremely inconvenient.

But this seemingly wild land is actually the land where Dr. Mackie established a deep emotional attachment and devoted himself to his career. It is also the land where he finally rested.

During Dr. Mackie’s 30 years of missionary work, most of his missionary work was through “traveling” with students, on foot, by boat, by train, along river systems or in mountains and hills.

Everywhere he went, he would pull cavities out of people’s teeth, preach the gospel, and sow the seeds of Christianity bit by bit.

In an era when the Beiyi Railway had not yet been opened and land transportation was extremely inconvenient, between 1872 and 1900, Machabo traveled to and from the Kavalan area nearly 30 times, and the road he took was known today as the “North Tamlan Ancient Trail”. road”!

Mackay is closely associated with the northeastern corner, and the Sandiaoling Jinzipi Ancient Trail and Caoling Ancient Trail are the focus of the missionary journey back to Mackay, and the churches established by Mackay are “Shuangxi Church” and “Bin William Memorial Church”. ”Don’t miss it.

Details of “Bin William Memorial Church” can be found in previous posts

Ma Kai crossed the northeast corner and entered Lan. He continued to preach in this area for more than 20 years until he completed his last trip in May 1900.

Most of the routes traveled are Tamsui, Keelung, Nuannuan, Sandiaoling Ancient Trail, Dingshuangxi, Xinshe, Caoling Ancient Trail, Dali, Beiguan, Toucheng, and Damayanshe.

You can choose this section: Sandiaoling Ancient Road, Dingshuangxi, Xinshe, Caoling Ancient Road, and Dali. To recreate the missionary path.

Wandering around, you can experience the missionary journey of Dingshuangxi and Xinshe again.

Strolling along the North Road of Tamlan Ancient Trail is the way to return to the missionary road of Mackay!

Walk from Houdong to Jinzi Monument to Peony, walk from Peony to Shuangxi Church, walk from Shuangxi to Gongliao Ciren Palace, cross Tianliao Ocean, and go over the mountains and ridges from Yuanwangkeng Caoling Ancient Trail to Dali in Yilan!

[Hiking the Northeast Point Railway Station Trail]

[Sunggai Mudan Station]

The special thing about Mudan Station is that it is the largest turn on Taiwan Railway!

The special thing about Sungai Mudan Station is the Peony Slope!

These two Peony and Shuangxi railways are closely related to early mining. Please see the previous post for details:

During the Japanese colonial period, the railway first connected to Mudan and then to Shuangxi. After the Mudan and Shuangxi railways were connected, it had an epoch-making impact on travel to Yilan!

This is like the North Tamlan Ancient Road leading from Nuannuan to Gongliao Beach and then to Yilan!

Peony was called “Wudan” in the Qing Dynasty, and “Dan” means settlement in the Pingpu language. Can

Before the Hoklo people came to reclaim the land, there were many Pingpu ethnic groups living here.

Mudan Slope: The slope height difference between Mudan Station and Shuangxi Station is about 50 meters. In the early days, trains had to be equipped with auxiliary engines to climb. In order to slow down the slope of the train, length was traded for slope.

As a result, there is a large 120-degree curve in Mudan Station, creating a strange scene of the front and rear of the train looking at each other. It is also the railway station with the largest curve on the island.

There is a steep slope with a gradient of 16/1000 between Shuangxi Station and Mudan Station. Mudan Station happens to be located on the famous “Mudan Slope” of the railway. In the early years, trains were not as powerful as today’s trains, so the design of switchback stations was required. The trains had to be equipped with auxiliary machines to climb up to this station. Later, in order to solve the problem of slope, the railway traded length for slope, which increased the length of the train. As a result, there is a 120-degree turn in Mudan Station.

The track where the train runs has multiple tracks with a “guard rail design”, which is used to reduce the height difference caused by the turns of the track and prevent trains from derailing.

The opening of the Yilan Line Railway in 1924 brought major changes to the transportation in the Shuangxi area. With the travel speed of the Mackay era, business travelers traveling between Tamsui Hall and Kavalan Hall would stay overnight in Shuangxi along the Tamlan Ancient Road. , with the opening of the Yilan Line Railway, the steam train will stop at Shuangxi to add coal and water.

This is reminiscent of Su’ao in the past. In the past, travelers traveling to Hualien via Suhua would stay one night in Su’ao.

The remains of the “Mudan Station” switchback station, the tracks and platforms have been turned into parking lots and open spaces, and Tancheng is currently a factory.

In the open space near the iron shop on Shuangxi Street, through the culvert, directly in front is the trolley route of the mine.

Walk north along the east side of the railway to Shuangxi Station. The original remains of Taiwan Railway staff dormitories on the east side of Shuangxi Station are currently covered by fences in the public works section to prevent them from being occupied or dumping waste.

Below Sungai Nan Tiangong, on the northeast side of Sungai Station, the old locomotive turntable has been dismantled, and the water tower/water crane/coal storage tank and other facilities for adding water to the steamer are naturally missing.

The current location is the facility building of the Shuangxi Electric Power Branch of the Yilan Electric Power Section, and there are two permanent power maintenance vehicles.

The section from Sungai Station to First Sungai Bridge has been abandoned after many reconstructions 74 years ago. It is currently replaced by tunnels and bridges such as “Shuangxi Tunnel”, “Gonghe Tunnel” and “Cheung Tam Tunnel”.

From June 1919 to September 1922, the Japanese Ministry of Railways opened the Sandiaoling Tunnel and completed the railway between Sandiaoling and Wudankeng. On September 13, 1922 (Taisho 11th year), Wudankeng Station (Mudan) Station) was officially opened to traffic on September 21, between Sandiaoling and Mudan.

Later, the ancestors of Shuangxi no longer needed to climb the Golden Monument Ancient Road to and from Ruifang. They could directly take the train.

At that time, the railway from Mudan to Shuangxi had not yet been completed. The ancestors living in Shuangxi still had to walk to Mudan to catch the train. A year later, the Yilan line railway was connected to Shuangxi!

At this point, the northern section of the Tamlan Ancient Trail began to decline, and the mission came to an end. On December 1, 1924, the Caoling Tunnel was opened to the Yilan Line and the entire line was officially opened to traffic, and walking the Tamlan Ancient Trail entered history!

The mission of Tamlan Ancient Trail North has changed from a traffic trail to a more important mission of historical preservation, ancient exploration, outing and outing…

We can use the northeast corner station of the Taiwan Railways train to complete the hiking on the northeast corner of Tamlan Ancient Trail North Road and the northeast corner train station trail.

Among them, the key stations are: Houtong, Mudan, Shuangxi, Gongliao,

We can choose two or three stops and alternately walk back and forth. It’s exciting just thinking about it and it must be very interesting!
