Last time I shared the history of Keishuin in my post, this time I shared in depth the special historical buildings inside Keishuin.
(1) Fudo Myoyo
Fudo Myooh
The identity of King Ming in Buddhism is the “incarnation of wrath” of Buddha. As the saying goes: Buddhas all have fire. What will happen to a Buddha once he gets angry?
That’s transformation. Each Buddha has a corresponding “wrathful incarnation”. For example, the “wrathful incarnation” of Buddha Shakuni Tathagata is the king of incompetence, and the “wrathful incarnation” of Maitreya Buddha is the king of central fudo.
There are many Ming Kings in Tantric Buddhism. The common ones are the Five Ming Kings, the Eight Ming Kings, and the Ten Ming Kings. The more famous ones are Fudo Ming King, Jian Sanshi Ming King, Great Powerful De Ming King, Vajra Yaksha Ming King, Peacock Ming King, etc.
“Fudo Ming King” is also called “Fudo Messenger” or “Fudo Lord”. Among the five great Ming Kings guarding the east, west, south, north and middle directions of Tantric Buddhism, he is the first to guard the central direction. The mighty one is the angry body of the Great Sun Tathagata.
The “immovable” in Fudo Myooh’s name refers to the unchanging compassion. Nothing can change or shake it. “Ming” refers to the light of wisdom. “King” refers to the person who can control all things and phenomena in the world and does not know how to control them. The honorific title of the wavering guardian. Fudo Mingwang vows that “whoever sees my body will have bodhicitta, whoever hears my name will abandon evil and practice good deeds, whoever hears my Dharma will gain great wisdom, and whoever knows my mind will become a Buddha.”
The statue of Fudo Myoō, located on the left side in front of the Keishuyuan Buddhist Hall, is about 1 meter high. It was the chief deity of Keishuyuan in the early years. It is also known as “Fudo the Messenger” or “Fudo” and is the guardian of Buddhist esoteric Buddhism. Among the five bright kings in the five directions, the one guarding the center has a fierce and angry expression, which is the angry image of the Great Sun Tathagata.
Great Sun Tathagata is the dharma body of Sakyamuni Buddha and Vairocana Buddha. At the same time, Mahavatara Tathagata is also the Buddha body of absolute truth. He is the most fundamental deity of Tantric Buddhism and has many names. everywhere, the light shines everywhere, etc.
The “Great Sun Tathagata” has three symbols:
First, “the light shines everywhere”, which means that His light “illuminates everything” and can shine in any dharma realm;
Second, “wisdom shines all over”. His wisdom is the synthesis of all kinds of wisdom in all the Dharma Realm, which is “perfect wisdom”, that is, “wisdom shines all over”;
Third, “Destroy troubles and shine everywhere”, He can destroy all troubles.
So, His “universal illumination” has three meanings, one is “light”, the other is “wisdom”, and the other is “destroying all troubles”.
The Great Sun Tathagata always reminds us to turn our consciousness into wisdom and not to be affected by the five aggregates!
In addition to the Fudozon in Keixuyuan, Fudomyoyan in Beitou, Taipei and Fudomyo Temple in Ning’an Bridge in Taroko National Park are also very famous!
(2) Baidu Stone
The Baidu Stone is the cornerstone of Japanese temples and the starting point for worship in the main hall.
The name Baidu Stone means “it takes a hundred round trips to be complete.” Baidu Stone can be found in all major Japanese temples!
The “Baidu Stone”, which is less than 1 meter high, stands on the ground in front of the Buddhist hall. It is said that starting from here to worship in the main hall, a hundred round trips are required to complete it. If you want to fulfill your wish, you need to go back and forth a thousand times to thank the gods and Buddhas for their blessings.
(3) “Lighting Mantra Millions of Times” Stone Tablet
Light is wisdom, “Prajna wisdom”
The full name of the Light Mantra is Vairochana Buddha or the Great Sun Tathagata Great Initiation Light Mantra.
The first mantra learned in the practice of Shingon Buddhism is the Shingon Mantra. This mantra is the self-realized state of the pure Dharmakaya Buddha Vairocana Tathagata. “From the great seal of the Great Sun Tathagata, which is not empty and true, the merits such as pearls, lotus flowers, and light are derived. With the great power of the Tathagata, it can illuminate the troubles of ignorance, turn away the suffering of hell, and enable people to be reborn in the pure land.”
The “Ritual of the Bright Mantra” adds: “Reciting this mantra once is equivalent to reciting tens of billions of immeasurable dharani merits from all the Mahayana classics!” Isn’t the Mantra of Light just a way to save people from death and save life? Dharani is the supreme secret mantra that has the ability to ward off disasters, gain benefits, embrace love, and subjugate!
The “Lighting Mantra a Million Times” stone tablet at the end of the Keishuin Mountain Gate Trail. I heard that people in the past were sick, so I came here to worship and circumambulate this “Lighting Mantra a Million Times” stone tablet
, pray to the gods to get rid of illness. Put your hands together, follow the abbot holding the rosary, recite “Master Namo’s Universal Illumination Vajra” and circumambulate the stone monument 108 times. It is said that the patients are often cured.
“Lighting Mantra” is the most fundamental mantra of the Eastern Esoteric Shingon Sect. Practitioners must recite it a million times as the most basic requirement. The entire text is a meaningful Sanskrit mantra. Its literal translation is:
“Om! The eternal light shines all over the place! Mahamudra! Lotus treasure! Flame! Please proceed! Hum!”.
Upholding the light mantra will generate a powerful light magnetic field and clear away all filth and darkness.
(4) Shikoku Chapter 88 lit up lamps for Buddha at the shrine

The Shikoku Chapter 88 spiritual site is also located in Keishuin
“Lamp” is a symbol of light and wisdom, and is also one of the ten kinds of offerings. I hope that through the explanation and meaning of the lamp, the “self-nature lamp” in your heart can be ignited. Lamps are a symbol of wisdom and light; burning lamps to offer to the Buddha began with the Buddha saying that lamps are a symbol of light and wisdom, and are one of the important offerings in Buddhism. Lighting a lamp in front of the Buddha is to mark the Buddha’s wisdom paramita.
The “Infinite Life Sutra” says: “Being a lamp for the world is the greatest field of blessing in the world.”
It is also said in the “Bodhisattva Tibetan Sutra”: “Hundreds and thousands of lamps light up to repent and repent.” Therefore, lighting lamps in front of the Buddha is to use the light emitted by the Buddha’s lamp of wisdom to illuminate our ignorance and enable us to Wisdom arises from the heart and realizes our wisdom paramita.
This is what is said in the “Great Collection of Sutras”: “Because there are many sentient beings whose minds are ignorant and foolish. When the Buddha saw them, he taught them wisdom and asked everyone to light the lamp of wisdom.”
“The Avatamsaka Sutra” also says: “The lamp of wisdom can break all darkness.”
When you come to Keishuin Shikoku Chapter 88 Shrine, don’t forget to light a lamp and offer it to the Buddha!
“The Sutra on the Merit and Virtue of Giving Lamps” also says:
“Shariputra! The blessings gained by those who give lamps are immeasurable and incalculable. Only the Tathagata can understand them.”
Let’s light lamps to worship Buddha together!
Light up the lamp in your heart, light up the inner and outer light, light up the wisdom and blessings, light up the Dharma Realm and shine all over it!
Master Namo shines all over the Vajra!
